MCDB 131 is a type of MCDB medium, initially designed for the culture of human microvascular endothelial cells (HMVEC). The medium contains trace elements, putrescine, adenine, thymidine, and higher levels of certain amino acids and vitamins. It is typically used in combination with EGF, hydrocortisone, glutamine, and low-concentration serum, with the serum concentration depending on the cell type. Each MCDB medium is formulated for specific cell types. MCDB 131 contains trace elements and glutamine, and can be used as a reduced-serum supplement medium for the culture of human microvascular endothelial cells (HMVEC), as well as for other cell types, including human retinal microvascular cells, hepatocytes, myocytes, and smooth muscle cells.
