Initially developed for nutritional studies of chick embryo fibroblasts, M199 medium contains unique components such as adenine, adenosine, hypoxanthine, thymidine, and other vitamins. It has broad species applicability and is widely used in virology, vaccine production, and in vitro culture of primary explants of mouse pancreatic epithelium and rat lens tissue, especially suitable for non-transformed cell culture. M199 medium contains Earle's salts and glutamine, no proteins, lipids, or growth factors, and typically requires the addition of 10% fetal bovine serum (FBS) for use.
