Description
Phytohaemagglutinin (PHA), also known as phytohemagglutinin, is a lectin found in plants. PHA can act as a mitogenic agent and a red-cell agglutinating agent. Phytohaemagglutinin-M (PHA-M), the mucoprotein form of PHA, is a crude extract of the red kidney bean Phaseolus vulgaris. It can be used to stimulate cell proliferation of lymphocyte and induce blastogenesis in mammalian mononuclear cells. PHA-M also can be used to remove red blood cells from leukocyte culture.
