MEM is a kind of widely used cell culture media and has been used for cultivation of a wide variety of cells. The formulation can be further modified for some particular applications. Alpha modified MEM containing 21 normal amino acids and 5 additional vitamins is the most enriched variation of MEM.

L-Glutamine is an essential amino acid for cell growth, which can be used as the energy source of cultured cells and participate in protein synthesis and nucleic acid metabolism.

Sodium pyruvate plays a role of carbon substitute in culture medium and participates in cell nutrition metabolism.
