MEM, is a kind of widely used cell culture media and has been used for cultivation of a wide variety of cells. The formulation can be further modified for some particular applications. Since Earle's Balanced Salts are replaced with Hanks' salts, this medium has a substantially reduced buffering capacity..

L-Glutamine is an essential amino acid for cell growth, which can be used as the energy source of cultured cells and participate in protein synthesis and nucleic acid metabolism.

Sodium Bicarbonate is used to provide buffer system and adjust pH level during cell culture.
