CMRL 1066 was originally developed at the Connaugh Medical Research Laboratories for mouse L-cells non-supplemented culture. It can be used as serum-free medium or used with serum supplementation to support the growth of many cell types.

L-Glutamine is an essential amino acid for cell growth, which can be used as the energy source of cultured cells and participate in protein synthesis and nucleic acid metabolism.
